United We Row
Meet Our Unity Partner: A Long Talk
A Long Talk About The Uncomfortable Truth is a 21-day anti-racism activation experience designed to empower participants with knowledge and skills to combat racism in their daily lives. They provide ongoing community support to foster continued growth and engagement in anti-racism efforts.
What is the mission of your organization?
Our goal is to eradicate racism and dismantle systemic oppression.
What kind of resources does A Long Talk provide?
We provide live virtual conversations and in person conversations, which we call anti-racism activations. After participants complete these activations, they become members of our online community and have unlimited access to various resources, book discussions, movie discussions, community forums and much much more. We call ourselves a "hodge podge of do gooders."
What does it mean to be anti-racist?
Anti-Racism is to oppose, to push back against racism
Why is sport such a powerful instrument for social change?
Sport is a powerful instrument for social change because of the influence athletes have over pop culture. Athletes are celebrated. When they take a stand, their impact is exponential. It provides an opportunity to bring awareness to a cause and most importantly action.
What education do you provide and why is it important to learn?
We provide an opportunity for people to activate. The goal is not for people to over intellectualize ending racism. The goal is for people to walk away from our sessions and do something. Our process is called ant-racism activation.
Before we meet with any group, team, university, corporation or non-profit, we build a virtual classroom That has all kinds of resources (from links to videos, playlist, articles, etc.) We call it pre-work and the expectation is that participants complete it before our first session with them.
What message would you like to send to rowers and coaches reading this?
It's important to learn because we have been "intentionally mis-educated" so the masses do not have the motivation nor the empathy to take action.
