Time Trials Conclude for U19, U23 and Senior National Team Trials


Finals and Semifinals are now set after Friday's racing at the 2024 USRowing Under 19, Under 23, and Senior National Team Trials on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. Athletes are racing for spots on the team that will represent the U.S. at the combined 2024 U19, U23, and Senior World Rowing Championships scheduled for August 18-25 in St. Catherines, Canada.

In the men’s lightweight single sculls, Sam Melvin won the morning time trial in a 6:35.68. He was over 15 seconds ahead of the second place finisher, Whitemarsh’s Justin Schmidt. Schmidt clocked a 6:50.15 ahead of Riverside’s John Mannion, who finished the course in a time of 6:59.99. The lightweight men’s single sculls advance to the semifinal tomorrow. The top three winners of each semifinal will race in Sunday’s final.  

The PR2 men’s single sculls had two entries from Community Rowing Inc. Christopher Campbell topped the timesheet with a time of 10:15.97. James Duncan finished second in 10:33.71. They will both race in the final on Saturday at 8 a.m. 

The men’s and women’s single sculls 2024 Youth National Champions both won their time trial this morning. Brophy College Preparatory School’s Ian O’Riley finished the course in 7:02.90 over 9 seconds ahead of second place finisher CRI’s Simeon John. The U19 men’s single scull final takes place on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. Annelise Hahl finished nine seconds ahead of Oregon Unlimited’s Kalista Whildin. Hahl will attempt to make her fourth national team on Saturday. 

RowAmerica Rye took the win in two different categories, winning the time trial in the U19 men’s double sculls and U19 men’s pair. Lucas Liow and George Dolce finished the men’s U19 pair event with a time of 6:32.54, just under 10 seconds over Row New Jersey’s Christian Mirzaian and Maxton Kilroy, the second place finishers. RowAmerica Rye’s Rowan Salemi and Benjamin Peron finished the men’s U19 double time trial in a time of 6:27.72 ahead of V-Sculls Donovan Moses and George Kapp, who took second in 6:36.74.

The reigning national champions in the U19 women’s double, River City’s Sumner Kerr and Emily Costa won their time trial by six seconds over Rockland Rowing’s Enya Gilroy and Yaara Ronen. Newport and Fairmount’s composite crew of Grace Murphy and Grace Moore finished third in the time trial in a time of 7:19.56

The U23 men’s single sculls time trial saw 12 boats compete, with James Fetter winning the time trial nearly 12 seconds ahead of second place’s Robert Sherman. The U23 men’s single semi finals will take place tomorrow at 10:32 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. The top three finishers from each semifinal will compete for a spot on the U23 national team on Sunday. 

King's Crown Rowing Association’s Colton Millar and Adam Pushner won the time trial of the U23 men’s pair in a time of 6:25.21. Both athletes are from Columbia University. They were over 13 seconds ahead of the pair from the Green Racing Project. 

 In one of the closest races of the day, Craftsbury Green Racing Project's Cillian Mullen won the U23 women's single sculls time trial. Mullen posted the fastest time in the time trial by just two seconds over Oak Neck Academy’s Catherine Barry. Mulle finished fourth in the U19 women's quadruple sculls at the 2022 U19 World Championships. Barry also competed at the same championships, finishing 17th in the U19 women’s double. 

Multiple events had only one entry with an optional time trial. The sole entry in the lightweight women’s single sculls, Whitemarsh’s Audrianna Boersen completed the course in a time of 7:25.84

Finals and Semifinals will be held Saturday and Sunday starting at 8:00 a.m.
